Fives enhances Hyundai Steel’s Gen3 steel production
Hyundai Steel aimed to increase its production of ultra-high-strength steel and contracted Fives to modernize its CVGL at №2 CRM, Dangjin site in South Korea.
The modernisation project focused on three main areas: replacing the cooling section, integrating induction technology, and optimizing thermal control.
Fives has addressed all three areas and offered:
- A new generation Dry FlashCooling® technology, operating at 75% hydrogen. It includes a recirculation system to reduce H₂ and N₂ consumption
- Installation of a 4 MW CELES Inductor to ensure a rapid and uniform temperature rise
- Implementation of a digital solution - Virtuo™-L for optimized thermal process control tailored to Gen3 steel constraints
Boosting thermal performance
The new Dry FlashCooling® design ensures perfect temperature homogeneity across the full width of the strip, with a precision of ±5 °C, even at high blowing speeds. This ability to blow at closer proximity without compromising on safety or quality is a real performance driver, offering great operational flexibility.
Driving performance excellence
Virtuo™-L thermal solution has been instrumental in optimizing the upgraded line performance, ensuring precise control of key process parameters in both annealing and galvanizing modes, even in a hybrid configuration.
After one year, performance gains are clearly measurable:
- 100% automatic speed control usage
- 95% strip temperature accuracy representing an improvement by +2% in heating and +1% in cooling control performance compared to the previously installed solution
This modernisation project demonstrated the capacity of new technology to overcome industry challenges and increase the production of new generation steel grades.
