Success Story: Producing very high-quality fine cements while reducing clinker content and lowering the carbon footprint

Discover the story and testimony of Ciment Québec Inc. (CQI) who chose Fives while it was looking for an innovative, reliable, and environmentally friendly grinding solution to upgrade its Saint Basile Plant.

After visiting installations in the United States and Mexico, and conducting pilot tests with its own materials in Fives' Research and Testing Center dedicated to cement and minerals industries, CQI selected Fives’ FCB Horomill® technology. This solution stands out for:

  • Lower energy consumption compared to traditional ball mills;
  • High flexibility to produce a wide range of cements (limestone, ternary, quaternary blends);
  • Compact and quiet design, perfectly suited to the plant’s existing environment.

CQI will soon commission two FCB Horomill® 4200 grinding units, equipped with FCB TSV™ THF classifiers for ultra-fine cement. This strategic decision enables:

  • Anticipating growing demand for sustainable construction materials.
  • Offering an expanded range of low-carbon cements.
  • Ensuring operational continuity with two independent circuits.

Why choosing Fives and the FCB Horomill® Technology ?

After a thorough comparison of the three main grinding technologies (ball mills, vertical mills, and FCB Horomill®), CQI chose the FCB Horomill® for:

  • Significant energy savings per ton produced.
  • Adaptability to strong seasonal demand fluctuations in Canada.
  • Guaranteed quality, thanks to tests performed on CQI’s own materials at Fives’ technical center in France.

In fact, the FCB Horomill® is specifically designed to deliver superior energy efficiency and significantly reduce the environmental footprint of the grinding process. Its unique grinding concept provides proven performance in very fine cement production for a reduced clinker factor.

“We are convinced that the FCB Horomill® is the best solution for our varied range of cements, and that it can best help us achieve our goal of reducing our environmental footprint."
