New products for new markets
The AIST Galvanizing Technology Committee (GTC) gathered in Columbus, Mississippi on February 16 – 17, 2023 for a technical exchange on timely topics such as aluminized coated steel and relevant process equipment, strip cleaning and safety. The GTC is a part of the Association for Iron & Steel Technology and strives to advance technological capabilities for hot dip coated products and processes by organizing meetings, workshops, plant visits, and technical sessions for the mutual benefit of both producers and suppliers.
SDI Columbus formed a remarkable partnership with Fives in 2018 which has led to several milestone projects.
Fives designed and supplied a new continuous galvanizing line (CGL № 3) which is exceeding the rated 400,000 tons per year production capacity. The line is capable of producing unexposed automotive steel grades as well as other commercial and specialized steel grades, allowing SDI Columbus to diversify its product portfolio. The first coil was produced in 18 months, which was ahead of the contract schedule.

Fives has also upgraded SDI’s existing CGL №1 and CGL №2 in Columbus. The CGL №1 upgrade included strip transport and exit section upgrades including a new side trimmer. The upgrade allowed SDI to improve the throughput and eliminate roll scratch defects. The upgrade to CGL №2 included a revamped cleaning section and new rotary shear, both improvements targeted enhanced product quality.
