Fives supports DPD’s growth in Portugal, equipping their new parcel hub with an automated sorting solution

GENI-Belt loop sorter at DPD Portugal

On June 5th, DPD officially opened their new parcel distribution hub in Loures, Portugal.
The Minister of Economy, Mr. Dr. Pedro Reis, and the Mayor of the Loures Municipal Council, Mr. Dr. Ricardo Leão, as well as customers, partners, suppliers and press delegates attended the ceremony to celebrate this outstanding achievement.

With a total area of 12,000 square meters, this new hub, the largest in the country, is part of a DPD’s expansion plan in response to their growth.

In 2021, DPD delivered 23.8 million parcels in Portugal, an increase of 10.8% compared to the previous year, due to the significant and gradual increase of e-commerce in the country. This trend continued in 2022, so DPD decided to invest in an ambitious plan consisting of the construction of the new parcel hub in Loures, in the Lisbon region, to further enhance their service delivery.

GeoPost Group confirms its trust in Fives sorting solutions

The contract was awarded to Fives, a partner of the GeoPost Group since 1998. More than 80 handling systems have been installed, of which almost 30 based on Fives’ cross-belt technology.

The automated sorting solution designed by Fives showcases loop sorting technology and includes

  • one 405-meter-long GENI-Belt™cross-belt sorter
  • three  GENI-Feed high-speed induction lines, and
  • 95 destination chutes for local and international deliveries

With this new logistics center that can manage up to 10,000 parcels per hour, Fives supports DPD in its growth in Portugal, enabling the company to provide a faster and more reliable delivery service.

“In less than two years, Fives has delivered a brand new turnkey material handling system that enables us to sort up to 10,000 parcels per hour, boosting the delivery service we can offer to our clients.

We are very proud of this new hub that meets all our operational requirements” said Joao Parelho, Head of Operations at DPD Lisbon. Fives Engineering and Project teams’ expertise, flexibility, and ability to listen, enabled us to achieve the goals and objectives set for the project, to our full satisfaction.”
