TWINGHY utilizes a collective approach to achieve green steel

Co-financed by the European Union and its industrial and academic partners, the TWINGHY project was launched at the beginning of 2023 to accelerate the decarbonization of the steel industry by introducing hydrogen to replace natural gas in reheating furnaces. “Replacing carbon-based fuels with green energy to produce green steel is a difficult target to achieve alone. Our consortium brings together a diverse set of expertise and knowledge from various partners, and this collective approach acts as a catalyst for innovation in the project,” highlights Ramón Garriga Capellas, Mill Operations Manager at CELSA Barcelona, part of CELSA Group. CELSA Group is Europe’s leading producer of circular and low-emission steel

Project progress and milestones

The 54-month project includes regular meetings (link to the kick-off meeting) between the partners to share findings, best practices and research results to accelerate progress. This time, Fives has invited project participants to its headquarters in Paris on September 13-15, 2023, to work together.

Fives presented the progress of tests on its hydrogen compatible burners to project partners. These tests provided insights regarding the construction of burners, installation planning, and purchase orders. Other key points included:

  • Industrial integration of H2 in steel production
  • Exploitation & transferability
  • Potential risks and dependencies
  • Action plan for progress in the next six months

In the spirit of collaboration, Fives invited its long-standing partner CELSA Barcelona to its test station in Bar-le-Duc, France, to present ongoing tests for the development of the new reheating burner. The burner can operate with a blend of hydrogen and natural gas and covers a range from 0 to 100% hydrogen.

Fives and CELSA Barcelona have also initiated the study of CELSA’s furnace №3 to review critical steps: hydrogen introduction without production disruption, automation system adaptation and furnace operation safety.

The next meeting for the TWINGHY project is scheduled for spring of 2024 at RWTH University in Aachen, Germany.
