Fives to supply complete crystallization station for the new Magdalena plant in Guatemala

As the Sugar Industry in Central America accelerates its transformation, Magdalena, one of Guatemala’s leading industrial groups, has embarked on one of the most ambitious industrial projects in the region of the recent years. The new sugar plant in Retalhuleu, at the heart of operation of Magdalena's existing cogeneration plant, is designed for a capacity of 15,000 TCD and represents a major step forward in modernization, efficiency and long-term sustainability for the Guatemalan sugar sector. The client selected Fives to support it in this demanding project in terms of execution schedule, budget optimization, and overall performance.

To secure high efficiency, reliability and optimum sugar quality, Magdalena has chosen Fives FCB to provide the entire Cail & Fletcher crystallisation station, drawing on Fives' long-standing global expertise in sugar processing technologies.

 

This scope includes:

  • 4 Cail & Fletcher Continuous Vacuum Pans (CVP) - including fully split and single models - to handle A, B and C massecuites
    • optimal sugar crystal quality and energy efficiency
    • reduced downtime and maintenance costs
  • 1 Cail & Fletcher Massecuite Reheater for optimal reheating before centrifugation
    • efficient reduction of the massecuite viscosity

    • deep, stable vacuum for high‑quality crystallization performance
    • efficient and economical operation thanks to low water consumption and very little maintenance needs
  • 13 Cail & Fletcher SUMO™ pumps to handle the transfer of magmas and massecuites
    • low rotation speed that preserves crystal integrity
    • reversible, steady flow, ensuring smooth operation and preventing hammer effects in piping
  • 1 Cail & Fletcher Cooling Vertical Crystallizer for maximized purity drop of molasses
    • optimized viscosity control and temperature profiles
    • reduced energy consumption and low maintenance needs
  • 50 Cail & Fletcher brix measurement probes (Monotrac™ & Hydrotrac™) to ensure precise control across the crystallization line

Global supply chain supporting a fast‑track project

 

Leveraging Fives' worldwide industrial presence, with facilities dedicated to the sugar industry in France, India, Thailand and China, the Magdalena Retalhuleu equipment has been manufactured and shipped within a tightly managed logistics framework to meet an ambitious schedule and optimized budget. Several key components are already on site in Guatemala (Vertical Crystallizer, Massecuite Reheater, Barometric Condensers and associated fittings), with the remaining CVPs and SUMO™ pumps in transit.

Fives FCB’s installation supervision teams are now preparing to support the next phase of on‑site assembly, alongside the customer.
