Landmark electrical steel contract for Fives in India
JSW Steel, the largest private-sector steel producer in India, is expanding into electrical steel production to support India's industrial development agenda, which aims to double steel production capacity by 2030.
The project will be executed at JSW Steel's Vijayanagar Works in Toranagallu and includes the design and construction of three processing lines dedicated to the production of non-grain-oriented (NGO) electrical steel grades, used for electric vehicles and electrical motors in general:
• One Annealing and Pickling Line (APL) with an annual capacity of 600,000 metric tonnes
• Two Annealing and Coating Lines (ACLs), each with an annual capacity of 270,000 metric tonnes
The contract was signed in consortium with John Cockerill. Fives will design and supply the annealing furnaces for each of the three lines. Leveraging decades of experience in thermal processing for electrical steel production, Fives' technologies are designed to deliver the precise temperature control, strip quality and metallurgical properties required for high-performance NGO grades.
"This contract reflects the strength of our expertise in annealing technologies for electrical steel production and our proven ability to deliver high-performance processing solutions for demanding applications. Backed by a strong portfolio of successful electrical steel references worldwide, we have demonstrated our capability to meet the highest quality and productivity requirements. We are proud to support JSW Steel in its long-term growth strategy and contribute to the development of India's advanced steel manufacturing capabilities," says Benjamin Michel, President of the Steel & Glass Business Unit at Fives.
Fives Group has successfully supplied strip processing lines and furnaces for electrical steel producers worldwide, supporting the growing demand for energy-efficient motors and e-mobility applications.
