Fives joins Nucor for plant groundbreaking ceremony

Fives attended the groundbreaking ceremony to commemorate the start of Nucor project to build a new greenfield steel plant in West Virginia.

Nucor Corporation, the largest steel producer in the United States, is building a $3 billion sheet steel mill to produce high quality coated steel products for automotive and construction application. The steel mill will have an annual capacity of 3 million tons, making it the biggest investment ever seen in the history of West Virginia.

Fives was entrusted with the design and supply of two high-end galvanizing lines and one recoiling and inspection line: a CGL N1 for automotive application, a CGL 2 for construction application and an RCL. CGL N1 and RCL will also include Eyeron®, a digital solution for real-time quality management.

A record-setting celebration

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on October 20, 2023, in Mason County, West Virginia, after Nucor received final federal approval to proceed with construction. The ceremony was attended by the project’s key partners: Nucor executives, regional officials and equipment suppliers to celebrate the start of construction. The event set an official world record by Guinness World Records, with the line of more than 540 participants shoveling the ground which stretched the length of seven football fields.

“We are extremely excited to move forward with the construction of this state-of-the-art sheet mill in West Virginia,” Nucor Chair, President and Chief Executive Officer Leon Topalian said in a statement. “With its low carbon footprint and advanced steelmaking capabilities, Nucor Steel West Virginia will be a leader in producing clean, high-quality steel for a range of end-use markets.”

Key partner

For Fives, this is one of the biggest projects in history

“As a key partner, we are very proud to be part of the project groundbreaking ceremony which marks the beginning of an exciting journey. In fact, we have already started delivering equipment since July 2023 which will continue until March 2024, and we expect the first phase of commissioning to start at the end of 2024 when the construction is completed,” says Hugues de Mallmann, Major Projects Director, Steel & Glass, Fives.
