Fives’ Heather McClanahan named Workforce Innovator of the Year

Hebron, Ky. – At the NKY Works 16th Annual NKWIB Workforce Innovation Awards, Heather McClanahan of Fives’ High Precision Machines division, was named the 2025 Workforce Innovator of the Year.

As an influential representative of the High Precision Machines Academy, she played a key role in accelerating solutions to bridge the critical skills gap facing manufacturing today. Her efforts have helped position Fives’ High Precision Machines division as an industry leader in workforce development, equipping talent with the skills for success, fostering a forward-thinking workplace culture, and preparing the organization for the next era of manufacturing.

The award honors individuals who challenge traditional operations and drive meaningful changes to attract and retain skilled talent. McClanahan stood out for asking tough questions about succession planning, talent retention, and the risks of losing critical expertise—questions that led to transformational initiatives now reshaping Fives’ High Precision Machines workforce strategy.

The Fives High Precision Machines Academy represents a bold commitment to solving the global manufacturing skills gap by delivering fundamental and advanced training in milling, turning, and grinding that ignites curiosity and excitement around machine tools, while empowering a future-ready workforce that drives innovation across the industry.

The academy is set to launch its first cohort in January 2026. The High Precision Machines Academy will combine classroom learning, on-the-job training and mentorship to expand technical skills across the High Precision Machines division of Fives while also supporting customers with apprenticeship and workforce development programs.

“It is an honor to be recognized as the Innovator of the Year by the Northern Kentucky Workforce Investment Board,” McClanahan said. “This achievement reflects the incredible teamwork and shared vision within FMSI that drive meaningful change in our current and future workforce. For us this is about creating opportunities that can transform lives and lead to shared success. I’m proud of my colleagues who support our goals to build a stronger, more skilled workforce for our future.”

McClanahan’s work has already drawn attention beyond Northern Kentucky. The High Precision Machines Academy model spans across North America. By cross-training employees, diversifying skills, and partnering with customers, the program aims to strengthen both the company’s workforce and the broader manufacturing community.

Leadership support has been critical to the effort. McClanahan credits colleagues including FMSI CEO Matt Shockey, HPM Aftermarket Americas President Buddy Schoch, Safety and Facilities Director Chris Reinfelder and Manufacturing Operations Director Ryan Mercer for providing funding, logistics and program design. Their backing has helped turn her vision into a reality that will soon impact employees and customers alike.

The Workforce Innovator of the Year award underscores how Fives is positioning itself as a leader in workforce development. With the High Precision Machines Academy set to open in January 2026, McClanahan’s initiatives are poised to influence not only the company’s future but also the manufacturing industry at large.
