A new Fives research centre to ramp up combustion innovation

Press release – Paris, July 5, 2018

On 23 May 2018, Fives fired up its new research centre: with the Fives European Combustion Centre located in the province of Piacenza (northern Italy), the Group will have the largest combustion research center in Europe, helping to speed up the development of the technologies of the future and better respond to new industry requirements.

A unique centre in Europe

Fives is reinforcing and modernizing its testing facilities with the Fives European Combustion Centre, the largest combustion research centre in Europe for the energy and oil & gas industries.

This centre will reduce the time-to-market of combustion systems which have improved energy performance, are more environmentally friendly and guarantee a high level of security; key issues which Fives addresses, notably by aiming to incorporate key technologies when designing combustion equipment, such as additive manufacturing and digital.

A centre dedicated to research, with cutting-edge facilities

The centre employs a permanent team of 4 R&D engineers which, with a total surface area of 3,000 m², will be able to carry out tests on 4 test furnaces: a fire-tube boiler, a water-cooled horizontal furnace, an induct furnace and a multi-configuration vertical furnace, with total installed power of 40 MW. This will allow them to reproduce industrial facility operating conditions.

The facilities not only allow them to test burners operating with natural gas, but also refinery gas, biogas and liquid fuels.

The Fives European Combustion Centre will also host a training centre where the Group will share its process expertise with its clients in order to optimize their industrial facilities. It will offer training on security and maintenance of combustion facilities.

Finally, a commercial showroom presents the flagship combustion technologies developed by Fives and its most recent achievements.
