Fives enhances Baggage Handling at Marseille-Provence Airport with its GENI-Belt technology
For over thirty years, Fives has been writing key chapters in the history of airport logistics. Back in the 90’s, the company revolutionized the industry by inventing the first cross-belt sorter specifically designed for baggage handling systems. Today, the cross-belt sorter, which has become one of the most reliable technologies used in airports worldwide, is renowned for its ability to gently handle bags of all shapes and sizes.
In 2023, Fives reaffirmed its leadership by deploying this field-proven technology at Marseille-Provence Airport, the fifth-largest airport in France.
The project involved the installation of two overlapping GENI-Belt sorters, totaling 1.2 km in length and featuring level changes of up to 4 meters, strategically positioned at the heart of the airport’s BHS (Baggage Handling System). This solution enabled the airport to comply with new safety regulations while boosting departure handling efficiency.
“Thanks to its flexibility and reliability, Fives’ equipment has enabled us to implement the BHS system across long distances, multiple levels and both existing and new infrastructures,” said Jérôme De Roaldes, Project Manager at Marseille-Provence Airport.
The sorter runs through two buildings, connecting the existing terminal with the new one and creating a fully integrated baggage flow across the entire airport. This approach optimizes processes and reduces transfer times, ensuring smoother passenger experience.
“Installation and commissioning were handled with great professionalism. The collaboration between the teams was excellent, allowing us to overcome challenges quickly and effectively,” added Andrea Bonani, Sales Manager at Fives Intralogistics.
Today, this solution stands for operational reliability, continuous R&D-driven innovation, guaranteed performance and a sustainable vision, reinforcing Fives’ position as a strategic partner for airports worldwide.
