Composites
Building on our technological advances from several previous generations of large multi-lane tape laying equipment, Fives Lund offers a SLALOM line of customizable tape laying systems for flat, vertical or contoured surface lay-up. Fives Lund offers lamination equipment in standard 6 or 1.5 inch formats.
Fives Lund also offers cost effective, compact and highly productive flat tape lamination solutions commonly used for layup of spar and stringer charges. This technology can be utilized along with stacking and forming technology to create engineered composite structures such as radius fillers.
Fives Lund has decades of experience designing custom forming systems to support the manufacture of vertical and horizontal stabilizer spars, wing spars, stringers and fuselage frames for the 787 and 777X programs. We have extensive expertise in the development of equipment and processes for heated forming systems, where heated charges up to an inch thick can be reliably formed onto a mandrel.
Fives Lund also supports several aircraft programs with specialty equipment for forming material ply-by-ply with laser guided course placement and accurate and repeatable forming sequences following the placement to build up a stringer or spar structure, including structures with complex geometry. Ply-by-ply forming assisted by robotic pick-and-place, as well as other automation methods have also been developed for customers looking to have fully automated processes
Our team has developed countless NDI systems to support the technical and quality requirements of the 787 and 777X programs. Our systems are currently in use at facilities around the world testing fuselage floor beams, wing skins, Z-beams and horizontal stabilizer skins.
Fives Lund has developed methods and accompanying automated machinery for curing and bonding composite structures outside of autoclaves. Most notable, are methods of replacing traditional fastener-based designs for joining composite structures, resulting in significant weight reduction, quality and assembly time.
These capabilities are supported by advanced equipment such as:

- Vacuum Lamination Tables (manual, semi‑automated, and fully automated)

Automation & Assembly
Fives Lund has experience with all major robotics platforms through delivery of robotic automation for the aerospace, general and food service industries.
Additionally, Fives Lund’s custom robotic control platform frees us to integrate robotic kinematics at the controller level on Comau and ABB robots. Features like microsecond I/O timing, real-time control of external processes, complex kinematics, custom manipulators, and tailored user-interfaces, are all possible at the integrator level on a common controller. Other benefits include improvements to pose and path accuracy and enables the native implementation of G-Code and other path-based process programs.
