FIVES SUPPORTS THE booming SEMI-CONDUCTOR INDUSTRY WITH A UNIQUE GRINDING SOLUTION

Fives has once again been selected by a major optical systems manufacturer to provide an ultra-precision grinding machine: THE OGM1600, IS THE ONLY HIGH-PRECISION GRINDING MACHINE BEING USED IN PRODUCTION TO MANUFACTURE THE NEXT GENERATION OF MIRRORS USED IN THE SEMI-CONDUCTOR INDUSTRY.

This customer knew that it was not economically viable to manufacture the next generation of mirrors - which are larger, up to 1,600 mm in diameter - using conventional grinding technologies. A machine reducing grinding times and the time for subsequent process steps (polishing) was required. Convinced by the performance obtained during demonstrations on the Cranfield Precision OGM 1600 grinding machine, They have selected this machine, which can grind mirrors with highly complex surface profiles and with no axes of symmetry, at the required level of precision.

Within five years, most of the semi-conductors being used in high end phones, computers, etc. will be manufactured using light guided by mirrors that were ground on the Cranfield Precision OGM 1600 machine.
