Tech seminar “Modelling for increased steel quality and productivity”
Fives and INSA Lyon (National Institute of Applied Sciences) jointly held the Tech Seminar "Modelling for increased steel quality and productivity" on September 9-10, 2019 in Lyon, France. The seminar hosted speakers from academia and the steel industry to have an open discussion on the steel industry’s challenges.
The regular exchange between research institutes, engineering companies and steel producers are essential to meet customers’ requirements which are becoming more and more specific. Over 49 participants, including representatives from Marcegaglia, Tata Steel, Severstal, Steel Dynamics, NLMK Europe, SSAB, Hyundai Steel, Posco, CLN – MA, Shougang Jingtang and Simap dived into a deep and valuable exchange on a variety of topics:
- Steel metal properties
- New steel grade requirements
- Surface and coating problematics
- Modelling and Smart line development
- Machine learning: big data
- Predictive analytics
The hot spot of the discussion is the risk of skilled personnel availability to run production lines for high value-added products. The consentient opinion is production automation. A complete automatic control of the steel production lines or constant checking of the experimental measurements of the line using predictive models throughout the coils has been defined as an ultimate goal for industrial companies.
