Qatalum, a Joint Venture between Hydro Aluminium AS and Qatar Petroleum, will build the most productive aluminium smelter in the world with the aim to minimize its environmental impact. In order to reach their objective, they have chosen Fives Solios innovative solutions.
Located in the Messaieed industrial area in Qatar, the first phase of the plant will provide a capacity of 585,000 tpy of aluminium with two 352-pot lines, based on Hydro Aluminium HAL 275 technology boosted to 300 kA. Full production capacity should be reached by the end of 2009. To ensure the success of this project, Qatalum opted for the electrolytic reduction technology developed by Hydro Aluminium and entrusted Fives Solios with turnkey contracts for the supply of (4) Gaz Treatment Centers as EPC, (1) High Capacity Green Anode Plant of 60 tph as EPC, (1) Fume Treatment Center as well as Firing Equipment & Process Control System for the (2) Anode Baking Furnaces, (11) Melting & Holding furnaces along with (2) Water Cooling Systems for the Casthouse and the Liquid Pitch Marine Terminal fitted with two tanks of 12,000 t each.

The Gas Treatment Centers will be equipped with YPRIOS, the double suction technology, which will ensure an extremely low level of fluoride emission and dust in all circumstances. These GTCs will also be supplemented downstream by two sea water scrubbers for the desulphurisation of gases.
The Green Anode Plant will implement
RHODAX® and
IMC® (Intensive Mixing Cascade) technologies, identical to those provided to Alcan at Sohar in Oman, along with the new
XELIOS, high density vibrocompacting machine. The
EOLIOS pitch fume collection system will minimize emissions especially regarding volatile organic compounds.
The Marine Terminal will be fitted with the latest developments for the total treatment of pitch vapour by RCO (Regenerative Catalysis Oxidiser) as well as magnetic coupling pumps for zero leakage.
The Anode Baking Furnaces will be equipped with HELIOS, the state-of-the-art Firing Equipment & Process Control System , to assure safety and optimum emissions control.

These contracts including the supply of equipment, local manufacture, engineering, construction and commissioning of installations. They demonstrate the leading position of Fives Solios with the major world aluminium producers.
