The European postal and express courier market is rapidly recovering from the recent economic downturn, and in some segments it has already surpassed pre-crisis activity levels.
In view of these new market conditions, Fives Cinetic offers innovative and creative solutions to help its customers in their common commitment to the improvement of competitiveness in terms of Quality, Efficiency, Sustained Development and Innovation.
In Spain, the Madrid province occupies the second position at national level in terms of volume of processed parcels. As part of the postal automation program that the Spanish public postal service has been leading over the last few years, the Company Sociedad Estatal Correos y Telégrafos S.A issued a call for tenders for the acquisition of an automated parcel sorting system to be installed at the CAM2 mass admission centre in Madrid.
The contract was recently awarded to Fives Cinetic, who obtained the highest score in assessment criteria compliance, and offered the best solution.
The contract integrates the widest conception of a turnkey supply contract, as its scope is not simply the design and supply of handling and sorting equipment, but an integral logistics solution including all additional maintenance services (including spare parts) necessary to ensure sustained equipment performance from a technical, economical and quality viewpoint.
The system specifically designed for Correos is based on the cross belt sorting technology developed by Fives Cinetic in the early 80s and continuously updated and improved since then. For Correos this is their first cross-belt installation and their largest parcel handling system, bringing very high performance levels.
The SBIR Cross Belt Sorter allows the gentle and active handling of a wide variety of products at high speed and high throughput rates (up to 20,000 items/h).
The SBIR sorter to be installed at CAM2 in Madrid will allow Correos to sort packs, bags and small regular parcels totally automatically. The SBIR sorter is fed by two high capacity induction lines equipped with labeling stations, two-sided cameras and certified volume and weight measurement for automatic data capture.
The items will be dispatched to 43 chutes equipped with a display and labeling system, designed to offer the highest performance in terms of both accumulation and the gentle handling of the items.
Commissioning with customer handover will take place in early 2012.
