On the site of the existing factory there has been a manufacturing facility for approximately 200 years. It was started by the Barrett family, and until 1932 it was the home of ironfounders, wheelwrights, millwrights and general engineers serving the growing textile industry of Lancashire and Yorkshire.
In 1932, under the name of John Lund Limited (Trade Mark "Precimax"), the Company turned to the manufacture of Precision Grinding Machines, and later Fine Boring Machines were also designed and manufactured under the ownership of Clapham Brothers of Keighley. This business developed and flourished, with customers World wide and, in 1958, was acquired by Landis Tool Company of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, USA.
Under the new name of Landis Lund Limited, the range of Landis machines was gradually introduced, expanding the size and output of the Company under this new ownership.
In 1968 the Landis Group became part of Litton Industries Incorporated, of Beverly Hills, California, USA. Landis Lund Limited continued to trade under that name until July 1985 when, for consolidation reasons, it became a division of a newly incorporated UK Holding Company called Litton UK Limited.
In 1994 Litton Industries consolidated its commercial businesses into the newly formed separate Company - Western Atlas.
In 1995 Landis Lund acquired Cranfield Precision Engineering Limited, a Company with a global reputation for the design and manufacture of Ultra-High Precision special purpose machine tools.
In 1997 Western Atlas consolidated its Industrial businesses into the newly formed separate Company, Unova.
Over the last decade, the Company has made very substantial investments in Plant, Equipment, Research and Development and, most importantly, people.
Training of young people to eventually take their place in the successful continuation of our Company, and training of our customers is given high priority.
In December 2005, Groupe Fives-Lille acquired the world-wide Landis Grinding Systems business from UNOVA, Inc.
The addition of the formerly named Landis Grinding Systems family including Landis Lund, Landis Cincinnati, Landis Gardner, Citco, Gardner Abrasives and Cranfield Precision to the Fives Cinetic Group represents significant opportunities for synergy that will benefit our mutual customers.
