The size of the CVP units commissioned ranges from 50 to 250 m3 and although many of these CVPs were very large, a considerable number (9 in all) are 100 m3 and smaller in size. In more and more cases factories are now choosing to invest in CVP technology for the energy efficiency benefits they provide. It is believed that this is an important factor for the somewhat surprisingly high numbers of small CVPs commissioned, since these factories realise that the performance and energy efficiency benefits CVPs provide are both significant and attainable even for small installations.

The increasing trend towards factories striving for ever higher levels of energy efficiency is becoming one of the dominant reasons for factories choosing to invest in continuous vacuum pan technology. This is evidenced by the high proportion of pans now selecting V2 and V3 as the steam supply medium as well as the increasing preference for high grade boiling duty for CVPs. The CVPs of the Fives Cail group are particularly suited for these situations as their design features enable them to achieve particularly superior thermal efficiency levels.
In the case of some recent comparisons it has been observed that Fives Cail CVPs have better evaporation and circulation characteristics than other designs of CVP, arising from a combination of design aspects such as pan geometry, tube length, incondensible gas extraction and installation aspects.
The better performances of the Fives Cail CVPs can be translated into either a capacity increase which can amount to over 40%, or a 0.14 to 0.240 bar (4 to 7°C) lower calandria operating pressure without the use of jigger steam, which allows lower bled vapours to be used giving a consequently higher level of steam savings.
