Ethylene is one of the basic molecules of plastics chemistry. It is produced by the vapour-cracking of naphtha (oil extract) or ethane (natural gas extract) and is used as a raw material in polyethylene plants.

Naphtha vapour-cracking is also used to produce propylene for the manufacture of polypropylene.
