FIVES PILLARD: A REVIEW OF 2008

FIVES PILLARD: A REVIEW OF 2008, A year marked by healthy sales and numerous commissionings including equipment with very low NOX emissions, which have been a tremendous success within the energy sector.

- In the energy sector, Fives Pillard was chosen by ALSTOM POWER in Baden, Switzerland to supply 60 postcombustion dual-fuel induct burners for the 5 combined cycle boilers, each at 265 MW, located at FUJAIRAH 2 electricity & Water plant, UAE. After several months of development at the Fives Pillard Combustion Research Center in Marseille (France), these burners, which operate with a combustive (“TEG”) containing less than 10% oxygen, are able to meet the most stringent criteria in terms of flexibility and environmental protection.

- EDF has awarded Fives Pillard a contract for 45 flame detectors (Packscan Safyr type) to be fitted on three 250 MW pulverised coal fired units, at the Blenod power plant (France), These new detectors are reliable and simple to use, and will replace the competitor’s existing detectors.

This site is the 7th power plant that EDF and Electrabel have equipped with Fives Pillard technologies in France and in Belgium and comes in addition to numerous similar references in Romania, Algeria and Hungary.

- In terms of commissioning, Fives Pillard has obtained provisional acceptance of 2x12 Low NOx burners at the ‘RUIEN’ and ‘LES AWIRS’ ELECTRABEL thermal power stations in Belgium.

For this project, CMI Energy Services awarded Fives Pillard the contract for replacing the natural gas burners of a 950 t/h tangential firing steam boiler, located at the ELECTRABEL RUIEN Power Plant in Belgium with the objective of reducing polluting emission. The proposed solution was optimized by using both CFD (Computer Fluid Dynamics simulation) and tests carried out at the Fives Pillard Combustion Research Center.

The boiler NOx emission levels have now been divided by 4 (from 800 to 200 mg/nm3@ 3%O2 dry basis) and now meet the European and Flemish area standards currently in use, which are among the most stringent in the world.

- Performance: New measures for NOx emissions achieved at Rhodia sites on the Pont-de-Claix (38) and Saint-Fons (69), France, confirmed the expected performance of Fives Pillard GRC Lonoxflam ® burners installed on these boilers. Desiring to reduce NOx emissions from its facilities but also to reduce its energy consumption, Rhodia had entrusted Fives Pillard to replace burners on several boilers on its sites.

The traditional gas burners were replaced with Fives Pillard GRC Lonoxflam® burners. The peculiarity of this technology is that it does not involve the process of smoke recirculation in the air combustion burner (without external Flue Gas Recircualtion) while ensuring a very low level of NOx emissions. They are simple and more reliable, and are also more economical for the client in terms of maintenance investments.
