Fives has initiated in 2010 the Engineered Sustainability® program, as the practical interpretation of its commitment to design technologies that combine operational excellence with advanced environmental performance.
The Engineered Sustainability® brand focuses on technologies that have been subject to:

As a supplier of technologies to those industries most exposed to the environmental challenges of today and tomorrow, Fives is intrinsically central to these challenges, and has a central role to play in providing solutions that will lead to a more sustainable industrial future.
Right now, Fives is giving its customers more control over their environmental impact. For example, the Group markets technologies that enable the use of renewable fuels, heat that would otherwise be lost, and the recycling of previously discarded resources. Other examples include advanced control systems that adjust operating parameters so that only the amount of energy actually needed is used.
Fives equipment also enables technological step changes that benefit our environment and make our lives more comfortable. For example, reducing vehicle fuel consumption requires engine components to be polished to levels of precision that were absolutely inconceivable only a few years ago. The precision machining centers designed by Fives are amongst the very few available in today's market that can produce such components.
To go even further, Fives wants to ensure that all the products in its portfolio - regardless of their function or market - set new benchmarks in terms of energy efficiency and environmental performance. That's the goal of the Engineered Sustainability® program introduced in 2010, and we are seeing the first results of that in 2012.
By choosing an item of equipment carrying the Engineered Sustainability® brand, our customers can be certain of buying a technology that delivers the best-possible level of performance in terms of energy efficiency, safety and environmental impact reduction.
The brand provides a guarantee that the equipment has been analyzed in detail to identify all its environmental impacts throughout its lifecycle. Fives teams have listed all the technical solutions for reducing these impacts, and have selected the very best of these techniques on the basis of ensuring that no one environmental gain (energy consumption, water consumption, pollutant emissions, consumables, discards, etc.) compromises any other environmental gain.
Fives provides its customers with quantified results of this work (on-site measurements, integrated product lifecycle cost calculations, production gains delivered for each additional efficiency point, etc.) as part of helping them to take full account of environmental performance in their investment decisions, and providing them with the resources required to achieve the best-possible performance for which the equipment was designed in the context of their own operational circumstances (dedicated training, advanced control systems, operations support systems and real-time monitoring of environmental indicators).
The result is that Engineered Sustainability® equipment helps Fives customers to achieve their own environmental footprint reduction targets and those of the products they market.
> What are the goals of the Fives Group?
We already have an enviable reputation for the performance of our technologies in a number of key industry sectors. Our ambition now is to ensure that in all our markets, our technologies are recognized as the most advanced available, not only in terms of operational excellence, but also in terms of environmental performance.
Ten Group companies are now actively engaged in the Engineered Sustainability® program. This means that as many different types of equipment have been the subject of analysis this year to maximize their environmental benefits, and that many more will be analyzed in the same way over coming years, because all these companies are committed to progressively applying eco-design principles to their entire product portfolios. As the Engineered Sustainability® program may involve advanced research and development studies, our goal is not to market equipment carrying this brand across all our product lines at the earliest opportunity, but rather to take the time needed to identity the right topics and put in place the resources needed to address them effectively.
For example, since our program was first formally deployed, we have developed one item of eco-designed equipment with our US subsidiary Cinetic Automation Corp. The leading prime contractors in the US automobile market are very keen to identify solutions that enable them to achieve effective reductions in energy consumption and emissions for incorporation into their manufacturing processes. We have provided a very clear and quantified response to that need.
Other ongoing projects in the steel, aluminum and combustion sectors will reach fruition either this year, depending on the complexity of potential improvements under consideration.
The Fives eco-design program and Engineered Sustainability® brand comply with the recommendations of ISO standards:

The new CentriSpray washer is the first item of equipment to receive the Engineered Sustainability® label
Developed by Fives Cinetic (Cinetic Automation Corp.), this new chamber washer for automotive components has been designed in accordance with the principles of the Engineered Sustainability® program. It offers a series of proven benefits in terms of environmental impact reduction, including:
> lower energy consumption than traditional tunnel-type washers by programming the equipment to operate only when a component to be washed is actually present
> controlling the flow of air used to dry components, which reduces the volume of used air to be treated
> the option to redeploy the washer for use with other types of component, thus extending its operating capacity and life
